Greetings of the seasons.

How time flies - first it was Christmas, then New Year and followed by Chinese New Year.

While everyone was busy celebrating with their families and friends over the festive seasons, our dogs were not forgotten - they had a wonderful Christmas celebration, many thanks to our kind sponsors for making it 'pawsible' by sponsoring log cakes and cookies. The dogs had a jolly good time.

During the last 4 weeks - we have been helping people and their animals. We have some new residence at the shelter - Rosie and Rover, a pair of Golden Retrievers. Due to family issues, through no fault of theirs, their mummy could no longer keep them and they are now in safe hands with us. Same time, Mimi (a Labrador), Jacky and Tina (a pair of Cross Labradors), had also seek shelter at Zeus Residence when their expat owner left them behind.

On a side note, I am pleased to say that both Rosie and Jacky had done a good deed. It was sometime in January, they donated their blood to save the life of their fellow furry friend.

Yesterday afternoon, we had some students from St. Nicholas Convent which visited the shelter with their family and friends. We took this opportunity to bring the doggies to Pasir Ris Park for a leisurely stroll and everyone had an awesome time.

What is Pain?

What exactly is pain?

How do you describe your pain and get relief from pain?

The feeling of physical pain is generally described as an unpleasant sensation or distressing experience of being aware of harm to the body. Humans experience pain in a variety of ways and from a variety of causes, but most commonly we experience pain that is related to injury or illness.

Pain is normally a symptom of an illness or an injury and is the body’s alarm system signaling that something is wrong. Pain can be an unpleasant sensation ranging from mild localised discomfort to agony. It gets your attention, signals that you are in danger and has an essential survival value. Pain can serve as a protective warning of potential damage, can promote learning (hot surface, harmful) or can set limits on activities, which encourages resting.

Xiao Hei went through so much pain and he behaved as though nothing had happened.

We have all gone through different kinds of pain - when we fell as kids while running or playing catch and chasing our friends around the playground, and as adults we go through pain either from physical injury or emotional pain.

If we can feel the pain that hurts us so much – how would a dog feel?

Can they tell you the pain that they went through when they encounter a dog fight and start to bleed? Can they tell that they are unwell and feeling discomfort? They can – if you can feel their emotions.

Sunday, 4 September

If you put yourself in Xiao Hei’s position – can you imagine the amount of pain he went through? Xiao Hei was in so much pain and not once he has ever complained. When a pack of dogs attacked him on 4 September 2011 morning, he was bleeding so badly till part of his flesh wound came off. Jacqueline, a volunteer with a shelter next door to Zeus Residence ran to me and asked for help. Immediately, I rushed to their kennels to see what had happened to the poor dog.

To my horror, I felt so much pain from Xiao Hei and he just sat quietly at the corner, as though nothing had happened. I was so cross that I asked the caregiver why the wound had not been cleaned and attended to – and she said to me in Mandarin “the wound will heal by itself”. I could not believe the silly reply that she gave me and we immediately cleaned Xiao Hei’s wound and applied basic first aid on him.

While cleaning Xiao Hei’s wound, I discovered several scars on him which were caused by dog fights. Xiao Hei was like an abused child being beaten by his parents continuously. I told myself that the hurt and suffering has to end for this poor dog – and that he will no longer have to live in fear.

Feeling sorry for Xiao Hei, we took him over to Zeus Residence to nurse him and the next morning, our volunteer Hilda took Xiao Hei to the vet at Bedok to ensure that the wounds were not infected. The vet cleaned the wounds up and he went home with antibiotics.

Saturday, 10 Sept

When I visited Xiao Hei on Saturday afternoon, his wound was healing very well but to my greatest horror – I found out that Xiao Hei’s anus was bleeding and part of it was sticking out. Immediately, we tried to clean the wound to stop the bleeding and to make him comfortable. As I was cleaning his wound, I felt so upset that Xiao Hei has gone through so much pain and suffering.

Xiao Hei was back at the vet again to see Dr Ang at Redhill who was on duty on Sunday. The vet did several blood tests to check whether Xiao Hei could go under GA – when the results were out – we were saddened to hear that Xiao Hei had tick fever and heartworm. No way he could go under GA – he would never make it. Dr Ang tried her best to push the rectum back with mild sedation and continued to monitor Xiao Hei.

When asked what was the cause for his anus to stick out – it seems that Xiao Hei had frequent diarrhea and he was using his muscles to push so often that it affected his anus.

Monday, 12 Sept

On Monday evening, Dr Ang called to say that Xiao Hei’s was losing blood and becoming weak. Hence, we needed to have a blood donor on standby the next morning for him.

Blood Donors
Friends helped to broadcast for blood donors through Facebook and SMSes. You must be asking me this question now “I thought you have a data base of blood donors – what happened?” to be honest, it is still difficult to get owners to come forward to pre-register their dogs as a blood donor and some have donated before and they cannot donate so soon. My vision for the future - I hope to raise a pool of dogs that are able to donate blood To Help Save Lives.

Not once has Xiao Hei ever complained, whined or growled at us despite all his pain. He never struggled whenever we cleaned his wound; he just stood still and allowed you to do anything on him. He is a real darling who went through so much pain.

Tuesday, 13 Sept

In the evening, we managed to find a Husky to donate his blood to Xiao Hei. Unfortunately, its blood type did not match.

And the search for another blood donor continued.

Wednesday, 14 September

It was late afternoon when we managed to find Dougie, a Golden Retriever to donate blood. However, it was getting late and it was not possible to get the transfusion done in the evening and we have to wait for the next morning to find out if there was a match.

Dr Teo called me in the evening to say that Xiao Hei had not been eating for the last 2 days and that his immune system was going down. Dr Teo wanted to prepare me that Xiao Hei may not make it through the night.

Saddened by the phone call, I knew that in Xiao Hei’s heart that he wanted to live and that he was not ready to go. I communicated with Xiao Hei and told him to be strong – I stayed focused and kept telling myself that I want to see him get well and see him play with the dogs at the shelter. He deserved this chance to be alive again!

Thursday, 15 Sept

At 10.00 am, Hilda made her way to Jalan Kayu to fetch Dougie but on the way to the vet, they were caught in a bad traffic, Dr Ang called to ask whether the donor was on the way.

Immediately when Dougie arrived, we did the necessary blood tests and at 1pm – I was delighted to hear that their blood cross matched and the transfusion was going to take place. Such news brought joy and tears, knowing that Xiao Hei was going to get his second chance to live again.

It was 4.00 pm – Xiao Hei received about 300ml of blood from Dougie and he was in stable condition. I visited Xiao Hei after work and Dr Ang told me that Xiao Hei had started to eat again.

Before I left, I gave Xiao Hei reiki till he fell asleep and also to reduce the swell on his legs which occurred due to water retention. When I left the clinic, Xiao Hei was fast asleep. Reiki helps to calm your mind and puts you at ease and helps you to rest well.

Xiao Hei was given the freedom to move around the clinic.

Black Magic?
Xiao Hei’s caregiver (we shall not name her but some of you will know who she is) told me that Xiao Hei was possessed by black magic, which sounded like some Chinese drama serial. It is believed that one man’s wife had an affair, hence the husband cast a spell on the dog and abandoned him at the temple to spite the wife. Feeling sorry for the dog, the caregiver decided to rescue him although many had warned her against taking the dog for it would bring her bad luck.

If you want my honest opinion, there was no black magic performed on the dog and he was fine. The dog simply had low self esteem and no confidence - that’s why he couldn’t fend for himself. We were going to change that for Xiao Hei by giving him the confidence he deserves so he can stand up for himself in future.

Xiao Hei is a young dog estimated to be about 3 years old. I made a promise to him that he will not have to return to the shelter where he came from and he will start a brand new life at Zeus Residence, where volunteers will show him with love and care.

Sunday, 18 September

It was Sunday afternoon and I was at the shelter getting ready to send 2 dogs to the vet for sterilization and I received a call from Dr Ang giving us the bad news that Xiao Hei passed away in his sleep. I recalled seeing him on Friday evening when he was so alert and walking about in the clinic – he showed me the will to live but I had this feeling that his system was slowly shutting down – Xiao Hei did not even show us his suffering and his pain. Could you see how strong willed this dog was?

We are extremely glad that Xiao Hei received the treatment and a second chance that he deserved. When he passed away, he went knowingly that we all loved him very much and he passed away with dignity.

What is Pain?

Could you feel the pain and the sadness Xiao Hei was going through? If it was us, we would ask for pain killers to stop the pain because our threshhold for pain is low. As for Xiao Hei, he persevered and he never gave up. When an animal wants to live, its survival instinct is very high.

We would like to thank Dougie’s owner James for allowing the donation of Dougie's blood to Xiao Hei. Dr Ang and Dr Teo for attending to Xiao Hei and for doing what they could to save him.

I know that from the bottom of Xiao Hei’s heart – he says "thank you for caring".

Dear Friends of Zeus

The last four months have been a busy period at Zeus as we were faced with so many things that needed our attention. Sadly, it was all the usual things - from lost and found dogs to abandoned and abused cases. Sometimes, we wonder if it would ever end, but that is wishful thinking, because as long as there are ignorant or uncaring humans, the problems will never cease as these are the people that are the cause of the problems.

But we plod on, doing the best that we can, because we want to show other humans, that it is possible to be informed and caring, and that is returned manifold by these wonderful dogs.

We try our best to keep readers informed regularly about our work via our blog and updates on Facebook. So please join us by clicking Facebook if you are not yet on our FB. You will be updated on all the happenings at Zeus Communications.

You must have recently read on our blog that at the end of October, we had to rescue 10 dogs from a neighbouring shelter that was going to close because the owner could no longer care for her dogs. We, together with all our volunteers, could not bear to see our neighbours being sent to be put down. We have come to know and love them through our fences for almost 10 months – how could one bear to see them put down? Our hearts could not bear it. The signs were all there – the lady could not even afford to feed her dogs and the poor dears were fighting for food because of hunger. We could not take it seeing those starving dogs fighting for the precious food, and getting injured in the process. So we donated dry dog food every week before that shelter closed.

Now they have joined us, we are amazed at how the dogs are getting along with our dogs. In their hearts, these doggies knew they were getting their 3^rd chance at life, they knew they were going on death row, so they co-operated and behaved at our shelter. So there have been no dog fights, perhaps because there is more than enough food for everyone and no dog needed to fight for food, perhaps they know that at Zeus, they would have a forever home, perhaps they sense that everyone at Zeus will have more than enough room in their hearts to share love with them.

We are so excited as we are preparing to move to a new kennel on 1 December and all our 43 dogs will be able to stay under one roof. It will be a free roaming concept and the dogs will be able to run and play freely, as they are always meant to be.

But we can’t do it alone and we need your help. We are a private animal shelter – run with passion from volunteers who are the voices for the animals. We rely on sponsorships to keep the animals alive and healthy at the shelter. We are now running full capacity after taking in the additional 10 dogs that were going to be put down. Zeus Communications 2012 Calendar

Zeus Communications’ 2012 Calendar is on sale! Proceeds will aid the street dogs who count on us to give them a 2nd chance to live. Vagabond dogs usually have nothing, and it’s up to us to give them the love they deserve.

All proceeds from the sale of the calendars will go towards the upkeep of the shelter dogs that the volunteers have dedicated their heart and soul to helping.

RESCUED

Xiao Hei the Dog with the Fractured Leg

Vet fees have been pretty high for us since July; we have had several rescue cases like Xiao Hei, a dog that disappeared for 2 days. His caregiver was so worried that one evening, she decided to jump into a 5ft deep canal to search for Xiao Hei. How many people would bother jumping in to a drain to save a dog, let alone a lady in her 60s? That was what Mrs Ong did, stunning her husband, by her dedication and how she followed her instincts and heart into the canal to search for Xiao Hei. And thank goodness she did. Poor Xiao Hei was hiding in the drain, injured and could not walk as he had fractured his front right leg. Xiao Hei was in so much pain that he struggled and wanted to bite his rescuers. After they managed to get him out, they brought him to the vet for treatment but his injuries worsened. The rescuers decided to call Zeus Communications for help and advice. We suggested that they seek a second opinion before deciding what to do. Immediately, Xiao Hei was discharged from the first vet and was transferred to Mount Pleasant (Bedok) where he was attended to by Dr Lesley Teo.

After performing an X-ray on his leg, Dr Teo suggested that his leg be amputated to make it easier for him to move around, otherwise Xiao Hei would need to drag his front leg around, and that would cause more sores. When Xiao Hei was discharged, he was put under the foster care of Anita, who has kindly taken care of him.

But there’s a happy ending – very good news that we can celebrate with – Xiao Hei has been adopted by a family!

Finally, it is such a great relief that, after 6 months of trying, we’ve managed to rescue JD. The first thing that we did was to bring him to the vet to be examined, where he was found to have severe heartworm. We weren’t surprised given the living environment that he was staying in all his life.

It was such an anxious time as JD was receiving his treatment. Severe heartworm treatment is very stressful for the fragile dog – there was a risk that he might not pull through the treatment because of the amount of adult worms in his heart. We prayed and hoped very hard that he will pull through to enjoy a warm and loving home he truly deserves after living on the streets for so many years.

JD's first visit to the vet and he had to stay over for heartworm treatment.

JD is such a fussy eater, that it caused a few worried moments. His tastebuds changed every day, we tried different things - roast chicken, fried chicken wings, honey chicken. JD will refuse to eat if he does not get want he wants. So, like little servants concerned for his health and not wanting him to lose weight, we obliged his Royal Highness’s needs. Volunteers Letty and Irene had to cook a variety of chicken for him. If he was not happy – he would just walk away. But, guess what, he’s a smart boy. I told him that there would be no more fussy eating habits, he has to eat what the other dogs are having. And now, he has finally come to terms and eats what is given to him. All he wanted was guidance!

But we can’t help but sneak some special treats, especially from his godmothers who will pan fry his chicken, roast it or honey bake it for him. JD must have been a Prince in his past life!

Rehoming

Some of the shelter dogs have found their forever homes, namely Sally (Cross Shepherd), Nichol (Cross Beagle), Xiao Hei (Cross Breed), Ringo (Cross Lab), Twinkle (Schnauzer), Baxter (Cross Maltese), Wally (Maltese), Casper (Maltese) and Ryan (Golden Retriever).

We are very thankful to their owners for giving the dogs a second chance and for opening up their hearts and home for them.

Do you recall Crystal the scalded cat? She is now living the lifestyle of a Princess. I am sure that in her past life, Crystal was served by several slaves! She sleeps on a leather sofa with her four paws in the air and just imagine it - her slaves fanning her to keep her cool. Crystal has found her forever home with our volunteer Jeannie who adores and loves her very much.

Lost & Found

In the last 4 months, we were notified of several lost dogs – a Schnauzer was reunited with his owners. However, the rest remained unclaimed and they have gone to good homes.

What is new with our society?

Scooter the Cat

When owners tire of their pets, they conveniently throw them out. Scooter a Cross Burmese cat had an ear infection, gingivitis and tooth decay – can you imagine how much pain he was going through? He was rescued in Simei and is now taken care of by our fosterer and she is giving him all the tender loving care that he deserves. Please click Scooter to read about his plight.

In August, we were alerted by a caller that an owner had abandoned his Chihuahua at Sin Ming industrial estate. When the rescuers went to get the dog at the factory, he was co-operative – however, when they arrived at the vet, he tried to bite them and the same evening, he bit the fosterer. They had no choice but to send him to me to be disciplined – and guess what? He ended up being such an adorable and loving dog – sometimes dogs just need a firm but loving hand and they become model dogs! We named him Smokey and I believe he was abandoned because the family members didn’t know how to handle him.

Ryan & Snowy

This is such a bizarre case. An irresponsible owner decided one day, “I shall not have dogs” and then proceeded to dump his beautiful Golden Retriever and Shih Tzu at Sungei Tegah. Ryan, the Goldie and Snowy, the Shih Tzu, both males were found by Iris while she was driving in the area. An old man approached her to help these poor dogs who were eating scraps off the floor in a factory. These dogs came from homes - how do you expect them to survive on the streets? Bambi the Shetland

An utterly ignorant and ill-informed owner abandoned his sheltie at the groomer – why? Because of ticks. Guess what? The dog didn’t invite the ticks on his body, the ignorant owner didn’t give him the protection he needed, and walked him around streets picking up ticks. When the parents found out, the owner then refused to bring the dog home. So, if the owner didn’t shower for a week and picked up ticks in his body, will his parents be right to also dump him at the orphanage? Where is the rational thinking in this?

The dog was so sad and confused when our volunteers picked him up from the pet shop that he kept asking what is going on and why isn’t he going home and going to someone’s home instead. We know that in his heart he loves his master very much – unfortunately his master was in NS and the parents did not want to take care of it anymore. But the Sheltie is now in a better home with a more understanding and well informed owner - Tia adopted him and re-named him Bambi.

Tessa the Fox Terrier

A Fox Terrier named Tessa was recently abandoned by her owners. She was tied up at a void deck for several hours till a kind soul brought her home and called our volunteers for assistance. Doggy Tea Party

We would like to thank all our guests for attending the Doggy Tea Party with Rosina on 22 October. We hope that you had great fun with your pets and that you understand your dogs better. The funds raised from the event, will go towards the upkeep of the 43 dogs at the shelter that are waiting for homes.

Zeus Doggy Outings to the Park

The weather has not been too kind to our dogs – and we weren’t able to bring them to the park for our monthly outing. When the monsoon season is over, we will resume our monthly doggy outings to Pasir Ris Park. Details will be available on our Facebook/Blog.

Little Rose: "I Want to Live"

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to fight for your life, just to live on for the ones you love?

This is Little Rose’s story; she loves, she fights – but she needs our help to stay alive.

Little Rose was rescued some time ago when she was found with a crushed paw. Imagine the amount of pain she had to endure as a young dog – living on the streets and fighting for food with a hind paw that was crushed beyond repair. To reduce the risks of infections or future complications, veterinarians had no choice but to amputate Little Rose’s entire hind leg. Fortunately, this brave lad recovered well and has been living safely in a shelter.

However, Little Rose and the other dogs’ stay at the shelter were cut short when the owner could not afford the upkeep of the place. Ten of the dogs had come to live with our dogs at Zeus Residence, while three others (including Little Rose) were moved to a neighbouring shelter. Had volunteers not relocated Little Rose, she would have been sent to be euthanized. On the death roll is no place for a young and sweet dog like Little Rose. She deserved a second chance and her wish came true.

All was well, till about two weeks ago – volunteers heard that Little Rose had not been eating well and decided to check on her. As we entered the kennel, we knew immediately that something was not right. Little Rose was quiet and inactive; a huge contrast from her usual self. Upon approaching her, we were horrified with what we saw.

A huge puncture wound was seen on her side and pus was oozing out. This was a sign of an infection and she needed medical attention straightaway. Volunteers immediately took her to the vet; her eyes were downcast and terrified. Tia, a volunteer, communicated with Little Rose via Animal Communication and uncovered that Little Rose had been attacked by two other dogs from the same kennel.

Upon arrival, the vet checked Little Rose for other wounds that she might have sustained. To our utter disbelief, this poor dog had another three bite marks on her stomach – one of which was the size of a 50-cent coin! For a better look at the wounds, the vet technician had to shave off the fur from the site. Poor Little Rose cringed in excruciating pain as her wounds were examined and flushed with saline solution. The puncture wounds were so infected and raw that it hurt us to just look at this dog’s skinny frame – not to mention her eyes that portrayed fear and insecurity, speaking so much of the pain she had to endure.

The vet advised against stitching up Little Rose’s wounds because after performing some tests, it was found that she had not one, but TWO strains of the tick fever virus! Should she undergo an operation to stitch her wounds up, her heart may not be able to withstand general anaesthesia required for the procedure. This meant that Little Rose had to recover own her own in the most sterile environment possible.

That being said, Little Rose was then scheduled to be hospitalised for a short period, during which she was given medical treatment for her wounds and tick fever. Due to the increasing amount of vet bills, a foster took Little Rose home five days later and has been taking care of her. Though Little Rose has been steadily recovering and her wounds are healing well, she is still not out of the woods and her life is still on the line due to the two strains of tick fever. Her blood test results have reflected that she is anaemic and her white blood count has escalated. She is due for another health check soon to ensure that her blood count has not dropped further and her blood work has returned to a more normal level.

Besides paying for the medical expenses of little Rose, we are also housing ten of Little Rose’s shelter mates . Although our expenses have increased significantly, so have our joy – the joy of knowing that we have prevented them from having their lives cut short as a result of lack of funding. The joy of seeing their grateful faces, their doleful gazes and spring in their steps knowing they have been given a second chance to live.

It is an uphill task to keep Zeus Residence going, to provide a shelter for those who are homeless (at the last count, we have 43 furry residents) and medical attention for the injured and sick, like Little Rose.

Fosterers – The Unsung Heroes

Being offered a foster place means everything to our dogs; a second chance in life. Without fosterers, we would not be able to help as many dogs as we do.

No matter how many animal shelters there are, there will always be times when they’ve reached saturation points and dogs have to be turned away. This is where an animal fosterer plays a critical role. Fosterers save lives by allowing many others to be helped and fostered dogs generally get adopted faster into their permanent homes.

Who they are
Fosterers are people who temporarily provide a safe and caring environment in their own home until a permanent home is found, helping them make the transition from their current predicament (of abandonment by their previous owner, a stray recovering from a horrific injury, or one that has just escaped the jaws of death, rescued from being put to sleep) to a new adoptive family. It’s a tremendously fulfilling position to be in, knowing that you’ve helped these animals through a difficult period of their lives and transforming them into socialised adoptable dogs, ensuring greater success in rehoming them.

What fostering involves
There are different roles for different types of fosterers. Besides providing a safe and loving environment to the fostered animal, a fosterer might be called upon to:

A) Monitor the temperament of the animal
B) Nurse them back to health
C) Provide basic training

A) Monitoring
Like us, dogs too have their own unique nature and characteristics. This knowledge helps us to match our dog to the right home and would allow them to integrate quickly into their new permanent homes.

Fosterers provide invaluable information about our rescued dogs, such as acceptance of visitors, whether they are friendly with children and other dogs, their behaviour when left alone, whether they drag on the leash, etc.

feed it every 2 to 3 hours and help it to urine and poo.

B) Nursing
Many a time, we have had dogs come to us in very poor condition, e.g. Malnourished, skin problems, infected eyes etc. These conditions are better managed in a home environment. Other times, stray kittens or puppies are rescued and they need to be fed regularly for a period of time.

Others may be ill and need to be given medication at certain times of the day or perhaps be bathed with vet prescribed shampoos periodically, and have to be brought to the vet if unwell. Fosterers provide such vital care to these animals.

Once back to health, the chances of them being rehomed will increase many-fold.

C) Training
It is easier to adopt out a toilet trained dog with good manners to good, prospective homes.

Every dog wants to be loved, well taken care of, and protected by their owners. But first, the dogs have to be trained and they are taught basic commands such as ‘Sit’ and ‘Stay’ etc. Training these dogs and makes it easier for the adopters to handle the dog in future.

In addition, the fosterer helps these dogs get used to living in a proper home and around humans, making it easier for dogs to adapt when they find themselves in their permanent homes.

The fulfilment
The fulfilment of dog fostering is immeasurable. Yes, it hurts when you’ve bonded with the dog and it has to leave for its permanent home and yes, it does take up time, effort, dedication and genuine care, so it’s not a job for everyone. But the sense of purpose and fulfilment you receive knowing that you have made a huge difference by helping one more dog find its way into a happy home where it will be loved and cared for makes it all worthwhile.

Born on 15 November 1998

Passed away peacefully on 13 October 2011

Age 12 yrs and 11 months old

Goldy was a very kind dog who accepted every rescued animal as part of the family;

she shared her life and her home with them.

Not once has she ever complained that we had strangers in the house and

she knew that her mummy’s journey was to help the voiceless.

Since the day Goldy walked into our lives,

we opened our hearts in 1999 and helped many dogs and cats.

May Goldy Rest in Peace.

This story was written in Memory of Goldy –the joy and the journey that we travelled together. If she was still here with us, she would be celebrating her 13^th Birthday today. By Lynda

It was 15 February 1999, Chinese New Year eve – it was a half day at work and I decided to go and check out a pet shop “Tim Bark Tu” at Hong Leong Gardens, which my friend, John suggested that I visit. When I got there, I walked around to see what was in store, and a 3 month old English Cocker Spaniel puppy caught my eye. The lady in the shop took the puppy out and placed her in a play pen for me to view. I played with her for a while and headed home.

As I was driving home, I could still see the image of her in the play pen calling out to me and saying “take me home”…. There were other customers in the shop looking at her too – but somehow – her eyes were connected to mine.

When I reached home, I had no appetite for my lunch and had no mood to do anything – not even to clean the house to get ready for Chinese New Year. I just couldn’t stop thinking of her. After an hour of deliberation, I called the pet shop to tell them that I was going to bring her home for the New Year and to wait for me before closing for the holidays.

Bringing a Puppy Home

It was about 3pm when I arrived at the shop; I paid for the dog and bought the necessary accessories and food to bring this sweet little one home. You must be wondering why I bought a pet instead of adopting. Back then in the late ‘90s, there were not many animal welfare organizations and there was only the SPCA, and the criteria to adopt was very stringent. But after getting Goldy – you won’t believe this – six months later, our doors opened up and we started rescuing and nursing dogs together. Goldy was the light and path that opened our hearts to helping other animals.

When I brought Goldy home, it was puppyhood all over again… it wasn’t easy having to get up in the wee hours of the morning having to attend to her and I was at my wits end with sleepless nights as I tried to paper train her. I then started reading about Cocker Spaniels on the internet and fortunately, I was able to get help and advice from the Cocker Spaniel experts who were based overseas.

I realized that training Cockers is different – you need to use different tones on them – a happy tone to tell them that they did the right thing and angry tones for doing the wrong things. Screaming and being angry does not work for them – you need to reason and speak to them nicely like an adult – and it worked!

This little girl graduated from paper training in 10 days! I was so proud of her and as long as she could go to the paper to pee and poo on her own, she had the freedom to roam about the entire house.

Animal Communication & Dog Training

When I think back about my life with her – I realized we did communicate in our own ways. But it was only after meeting Rosina, my teacher and mentor, that her teaching was put into perspective;we all can communicate with our pets.

I admit that I made the greatest mistake when she was a puppy – I thought doggy training will be good for her – instead, she disliked it tremendously. Every Wednesday, whenever it was time to go for training, Goldy would hide under my bed and it was really hard to get her out of the house. And when the training was over – she would dash to the car and say “Let’s go home!”

There are various dog trainers; I would recommend that you find someone that you are comfortable with – check them out and understand their training methods. The one that we attended – was no fun for a puppy like Goldy, as training should be fun and enjoyable. I still remember how Goldy would face her bum towards the trainer whenever he walked past because she refused to look at him! I knew the trainer was pissed with me, but it didn’t matter. We were not training for a competition so Goldy’s happiness was more important. Our objective was to learn something that we could apply and she was more than perfect for being able to understand basic commands.

Goldy loved to play on the slides – she would climb up the steps and slide down on her own and we had to make sure that the playground had no children playing about, because we did not wish to get into trouble with the parents.

Animal Rescue

Goldy and I rescued a lot of animals together. The number of dogs that received aid was uncountable. Goldy was a very kind soul and had a heart of gold…. It was natural for other dogs to get jealous whenever their owners bring other pets home. However, there was not a single complaint from Goldy. Admittedly, I do feel guilty that I did not have much time for her – as our rescue work took up so much of my free time – but she knew that this was my journey and she opened the doors to other dogs who crossed my path.

Taking Care of an Old Dog

As Goldy was getting on with age, she started to develop heart problems and tick fever. I almost lost her last October and I am very thankful for Lang, a Weimaraner, who donated blood to Goldy and she was able to live for another year.

The last one year was not easy, having to bring Goldy to the vet regularly every month for check-ups and having to drain the fluids from her stomach every 10 days. I owed it to her to take care of her till the day that she was due to leave me – she ha been so patient with me all these years and it was definitely not easy on her part, having to share me with other fur kids.

Everytime we vistited the vet, I knew Goldy’s time with us was getting shorter. I kept asking her whether I could do anything for her and whether she had any wishes that I could fulfill. But all she asked was for me to spend time with her.

Dogs ask for the simplest things from their owners – “quality time”. Each day after work, I tried to spend as much time with her. I remember how she would ask me to switch on the air con whenever she was feeling hot – and of course I would do it for her.

Granting Goldy’s Wish

In early October, we held an adoption drive at the Doggy Style Café at NEX Shopping Centre and when I saw Lynn celebrating her dog’s birthday, I received a message from Goldy that she would like to have a birthday party to celebrate her 13^th Birthday. I told Irene about Goldy’s wish and she suggested that we celebrate much earlier because Goldy was not feeling well and she might not make it till 15 November.

On Monday morning, I started planning Goldy’s party; I quickly invited our friends and their fur kids who could make it for the party, called the caterer to order food for the humans and The Barkery to order a doggy birthday cake.

I am very thankful to Elizabeth of The Barkery for taking my call at 11pm and for accommodating my request to bake a birthday cake and cupcakes for Goldy’s birthday party after explaining the situation. Team members from the Barkey have really gone the extra mile to make a dog’s wish come true.

The Birthday Party
Goldy’s party was held on 11 October at Ericsson Guest House, which was attended by our friends (people and dogs) and family members. The dogs enjoyed the food and had a great time eating the meatloaf and cupcakes.

Goldy had always loved her food and I was so happy to see that she enjoyed herself as she was eating away and I had granted her wish to have a birthday party.

I would like to thank Irene for making her delicious home-made Shepherd Pies for the doggies. The shelter dogs too shared the celebration by having a feast. Irene is our shelter dogs’ favourite cook!

Her Last Breath

On Thursday morning, 13 October, Goldy passed away peacefully in her sleep next to me on my bed. She went peacefully – no struggling to catch her last breath – her heartbeat just stopped. I know that my dogs who are on the rainbow bridge have taken her away from me and she is now happily playing with them in the Garden of Eden.

Our Message to all Pet Owners

Whether your dog is young or old, it is our moral obligation to see it through their entire life with care and love. Dogs never look at how much money you have or own, all they ask is for your love and companionship.

A PET is a Life Time Commitment till the day they leave this earth.

It is a lot of hard work taking care of old dogs – especially when they are old and sick. Goldy could no longer walk but she still loves her food. To me - as long as the dog is still eating and loves their food - I will keep her going till the day she departs and joins her fur friends on the Rainbow Bridge.

Goldy tends to pee while she is asleep - it does not bother me, I will continue to care for her till her last days. Although it was extra work to wash the bed sheets – it was part and parcel for a dog to grow old – like humans – one day it will happen to us and our children/caregivers will have to take care of us when we are no longer mobile. Something for you to think about, what happens if one day you can no longer take care for yourself e.g. cant feed yourself, cant go to the toilet on your own and become bed ridden – you need help right? Will our children take care of us? Will we end up at an old folks home so that someone will feed and clean us up everyday? Are we prepared to grow old and face it?

No matter how much work is involved - we HAVE to see it through and we owe it to them because we brought them into our lifes. Like our parents, we owe it to them for brining us into this world and its our duty as children to take care of our aged parents.

Do not abandon your old sick dogs on the streets or somewhere deserted - just because its too much work, the medical cost and pass the dirty job to others to pick up.

Many times, through our work with the animals, we often encounter old and sick dogs abandoned on the streets and they can be found as far as Lim Chu Kang (farmland areas), Jurong and Tuas (industrial estates).

I believe whoever abandons or ill treats their pets will have bad karma some time later in their lives. Whoever thinks about doing it had better think twice and many times more. Because once you’ve brought an animal into your life, it’s your responsibility and you owe it to your pet to look after it through thick and thin, till its very last breath.

Baybe's Journey

I've never had the intention of keeping a pet dog. But, the first time I met Baybe, he totally melts my heart, it’s love at first sight and so I’ve make the decision to keep him forever till death tear us apart. But things started to change... From good, to the worst end...

The first day when Baybe went home with me, my life totally change, because of Baybe... I am much more happier than before...

Had been keeping him by my side ever since mid-July 2009, things changed during August 2010, HDB had been visiting us weekly regarding Baybe’s matter. My family and I tried to avoid by not opening the door each & every time they drop by. Till one day, during end Oct 2010, my boyfriend came back home from downstairs after taking Baybe out for a walk. Just when they gonna step into the house, the man from HDB stopped them. Due to the noise outside, I went out of the house to see what’s going on & was informed that I must remove Baybe from the flat. Otherwise, I will be fined up to $4,000.

Due to all the stress that HDB is giving, I seek for help from Baybe's trainer. Her advice was bringing Baybe to the factory side & release him there. Being helpless, I followed what she say. When I’ve reached the factory side, I feed Baybe & release him. Once I’ve released him, he ran off. He ran across a bridge, till my brothers shouted loudly in Chinese "Baybe 我们回家咯快点回来 (we are going home, come back!)”. He ran back to us, we leash him & walk back home.

While on the way heading home, we met Baybe’s friend’s owner. She gave me a good scolding and she promise that she'll help me with this matter. She then called her friend, Elise and inform her regarding this matter, Elise called me on the next following day, telling me that she'll be fetching me & baybe to a farm at Pasir Ris. When reached the farm, I was asked to pay a monthly deposit & a monthly boarding fee. Due to the shortage of cash, Elise paid half of the amount for me.

Each & every month I’ve been paying Baybe's rent regularly, I am the only person working in my family, I've to support my mom & 2 little brothers with $800 that I am earning monthly, it’s really hard for me.

Till starting of Aug 2011 , I've no choice but to seek help from the boarder, I asked if he's able to take over Baybe's ownership , he disagree hurriedly and say if I am unable to pay him the boarder fee he'll send Baybe back to my place, I was panic.

As i am not allowed to keep Baybe at home due to the HDB. I went around asking for friend's advice, one of my friend advice me seek help from Mel, I had been thinking for days till I decided to send Mel a Facebook message. Mel was really kind; she told me she'll help me with it.

After waiting for some days, she replied, telling me that a friend of hers might be able to help. As soon as I received Mel’s message, Lynda called me and arrange to meet up with my dog. Till now, my dog had been settled down at Zeus Play House. I am really glad to have met Mel & Lynda.

They're like the guardian angels of my dog. Thank you for the help!

Footnote from the Editor:

When Baybe arrived in August 2011, he was skin and bones; he was so hungry as though he has not eaten for days. From his reaction, we knew that he did not get enough food at the other boarding facility. We gave Baybe some time to settle down and gave him more food to fill his stomach. Within a month, Baybe grew to be a very confident dog and he wanted to take charge. Baybe was staying with a few young teenagers (dogs) and we had to balance the yin and the yang in the kennel – or else the male dogs would start and want to gain control.

Updates:On Saturday, 19 Nov when we visited our dogs at the shelter, we understand from the volunteers that Sox was feeling miserable. Hearing such words hurts our hearts to hear that a dog is unhappy. We went to visit Sox and she was locked up in the kennel with another dog and she did look sad and we decided to take her into our shelter since 2 dogs have found home and we had a space for Sox.

Our policy at the shelter is that we can only take in a new dog when a dog at the shelter has been rehomed - or else the place will be over crowded and the dogs will get frustrated due to space constraints. The number of dogs rescued from the shelter that was closed down is ten.

On Sunday, 30 October - Zeus Communications rescued nine dogs from being put down. The owner of a shelter has been struggling financially for some time now and could barely afford the upkeep of the dogs under her care. For the last 3 months, we have been providing her 14 shelter dogs with bags of dry food.

Unfortunately, the shelter had to close and the dogs were scheduled to be put down by the end of October. Thanks to our dedicated volunteers, the dogs have escaped their unfortunate fate, and have moved in with our shelter’s dogs. They are currently undergoing rehabilitation and it gives us a chance to get to know the dogs better so that they can be rehomed.

Initially, we were worried that the dogs would not get along with those in our shelter. Amazingly, after we had communicated with the dogs and told them that they need to share the space and live in harmony, they seemed to understand. So far, they have adhered to our rule of “No Fighting Allowed” and are living together as friends. Dogs know when their fur friends are on death row and they somehow welcome them with open hearts and accept them as members of the families.

Many times, when we are at the shelter playing and attending to our dogs – our neighbour’s dogs will look across the fence and say “Hey! You guys are having so much fun – how we wish we can join you.” The dogs look through the fences with envy that they were always having fun. Well, what we can say is that today their wish came through – they get better nutritious meals and snacks from us. What the dogs can now look forward to now would be car rides to the park – more walks and fun time with the volunteers.

The Zeus Play House

However, Zeus Play House is now getting too crowded and we would like the dogs to be adopted out into loving homes. It would be great if the dogs could go to families who would love and care for them instead of being confined to a small amount of space in the shelter. A shelter is a temporary home for the dogs till they find their forever home. We do not want it to be a life sentence for our dogs, confining them forever. Our role is to house, socialise and nurse them until they are ready for adoption, when they find the right companion.

For those wondering why we did not choose to take over the shelter where the dogs were at previously, it is because it does not make economic sense to spend the extra money on rentals and the upkeep of the shelter. Apart from cost, we want to give the dogs a chance to be adopted instead of leaving them to spend the rest of their lives at the kennels. We are also running on a very tight budget as the money available to us for animal rescue comes from sponsors and benefactors.

Daisy, Nokia, Jelly Bean, Coco, Bobby, Mei Mei, Tiger, Blackie and Faith are the nine who are now safely residing in our shelter. We have learnt that most of them were rescued from Kranji Industrial Estate, where heavy vehicles and machines made the place dangerous for the dogs to roam about. Right now, we are hopeful that the biggest and sweetest boy (Bobby) would be a suitable blood donor to save the lives of dogs who are in need of blood.

New Residents for Adoption

Daisy - Female, est. 2 years old

Daisy is the mummy of Jellybean and Nokia. She and her babies were rescued from one of Kranji's many danger zones where traffic is heavy and big trucks rush by with no regards to the lives of the dogs. Daisy is a smart lady who always has a keen eye for her surroundings especially when it's time for treats! Her sweet temperament, coupled with her beautiful coat of brown and black, she’s a doggie that’s hard to miss!

Nokia (with white chest) and Jelly Bean

Nokia - Female, 1.5 years old

Nokia was found at Kranji with her mummy Daisy and sister Jellybean. She is full of boundless energy - you can see her racing up and down the kennels, playing with her mummy and sister. During her calmer moments, she'd tag along with you, curious as ever! Her name means "little child" in the Teochew dialect, because she used to be a skinny puppy who never seemed to put on any weight! But after what seemed like a long time, Nokia has finally grown up into a fine young lady.

Jelly Bean - Female, 1.5 years old

Jelly Bean is Daisy's daughter and Nokia's sister, found at Kranji. She was named Jellybean to suit her personality - a bag of colourful jellybeans! Orange is for her sunny personality, red for her warmth and blue for her oh-so-cool attitude. Come see Jellybean play and you will know what we mean!

Coco - Female, 1.5 years old

Coco was also found at Kranji Industrial Estate and she looks like a pug in disguise! She is the quieter one of the lot, preferring to stealthily take in her surroundings and then secretly steal any uneaten food! Her guilty looks never fail to give her away and she'll make you roar with laughter. With her soft brown coat and black muzzle, she is no doubt a little pug in disguise! Take a look at her!

Bobby - Male, 3 years old

A sweet, gentle boy that belies his big size, Bobby is a real darling. He was rescued as a puppy by an NS man, who kept him near the quarters of his bunk. The man's seniors disallowed that and Bobby was brought to the shelter. Sadly, his owner has not visited him for a long time. Always looking a little forlorn, Bobby clearly misses his owner very much and would love to have a family to call his own.

Mei Mei - Female, 5 years old
A lorry driver found Mei Mei wandering near the sea some time ago. Although quiet, Mei Mei is one to love attention and will come running to you when called! Her lovely cream coat of ringlets makes her most ladylike-looking.

Tiger - Female, 1.5 years old

Hear me ROAR (or yelp)! This unusual and beautiful brindle coloured girl will rush to investigate new surroundings, but will be the first to yelp in fear at any sign of trouble. She loves following people around, and will stick close by your side during your visit to the shelter. Her curious and playful nature makes her sweet and endearing.

Blackie - Male, 1 year old

Blackie was found at Kranji, chasing cars and bikes as they travelled along the road. He is finally safe from the dangerous life on the streets and would love to have a home to call his own.

Faith – Female, 2 years old

Faith was found in a rubbish bin by an old man in Kranji. She had been rehomed but because she could not get along with the existing dogs, she had to return to the shelter. Despite the transitions from the streets to a home to a shelter, Faith is always full of hope that one day; the perfect family would come along for her.

Medical Health Check

Before being rehomed, all the dogs need to undergo a full health check to ensure that they are well. They also have to be microchipped and vaccinated. We urgently need funds for their health checks and the average amount for each dog will amount to around $100. Each healthy and happy dog has a better chance of getting rehomed.

It was early in the morning, my owner took the leash out and I wagged my tail happily, excited that we were going for a walk. After walking for a while, my owner tied me to an outdoor water pipe and walked away. I thought my owner was going away to buy something and that it wasn’t convenient to bring me along, so I waited there patiently. Minutes passed… then hours… but my owner never came back for me. The sun was getting hotter and hotter. There wasn’t any water and food for me - I was so tired, thirsty and hungry.

I was hopeful that my owner will come back for me but she never did. Fear and panic started to creep in. What did I do wrong? Why am I left here alone, tied to the water pipe, with no shade, water and food? I could not believe my owner could be so heartless to me.

A kind uncle walked past and took pity on me. He gave me some water to drink and I lapped it up gratefully. He then left. After a while, he came back, untied me and brought me upstairs. I overheard him saying to this kind lady that he called ‘daughter-in-law’ that he saw me tied there from 8.30am to 1pm under the sweltering sun with no food and water. I don’t know how human time works but it felt like an awfully long time.

They fed me some food - I was so hungry that I finished everything! My rescuer commented that I am very friendly and sweet and have an extremely good temperament. I love wagging my tail and I get along with children and other dogs. I play well with her daughter and nieces. She was impressed that I didn’t even bark back at her dog when her dog barked at me.

I heard them commenting that I am so skinny, my nails are so long and my limbs are covered with sores. You see, my owner didn’t take very good care of me. Despite that, I still love my owner very much.

They brought me to the vet and the vet said that despite being malnourished, I am healthy. My gums are so bad, they can’t really estimate my age. I’m not sure how old I am; my owner never celebrated birthdays with me. The vet said that I might be about 6-8 years old.

I am very lucky that they managed to find me a foster home to stay in. However, my foster will be traveling soon by the end of October and I will once again be homeless.

I am a female Fox Terrier and my foster calls me Tessa. Will you please give me a home? I am very gentle and I don’t bark. I love children and am easily contented.

When Will My Next Meal Be?

This is Dexter when we first met him at Lim Chu Kang fish farm.

He was such a happy camper. He was delighted to see us, completely oblivious to the fact that he was severely emaciated.

There wasn’t any sign of Dexter feeling sorry for himself. Though extremely scrawny, he was living each day with exuberance and joy.

Seeing Dexter has taught me about optimism in the face of adversity.

It must have been months as a vagabond with little food to eat and fresh water to drink before Dexter wandered into a fish farm at Lim Chu Kang. Dexter (as we have named him) was skin and bones when he was found inside the toilet by AG who was renting part of the fish farm. One can literally count the number of bones on his rib cage. Dexter was shivering badly when he was found, shaking from hunger and cold as it was pouring heavily that day.

AG had no idea how he managed to get there because there were guard dogs at the fish farm and they were not too friendly towards other dogs.

“Hello boy, why are you here? Did you lose your way? Are you hungry?” asked AG. Dexter responded by wagging his tail as hard as he could and followed her everywhere she went. Fearing that he would be attacked by the other dogs at the fish farm, she led him back to the toilet by giving him canned food.

She was astonished that it was finished in seconds! Dexter was literally gobbling it up. He must have been famished! Filling up the food bowl with dried kibbles to the brim this time, again it was devoured in last than a minute. For the third time, she filled the bowl again and this time around Dexter finished half of it. Can you imagine how hungry Dexter must have been, to have finished one huge can of dog food and one and a half full bowl of kibbles all in a matter of minutes!?

AG gave Dexter some water and asked him to stay where he was. Sweet Dexter obeyed.

“He is very trusting and sweet. I wanted to help him because he is very pitiful. I felt that he trust us and seem to understand what I am trying to tell him.” AG told me. That was when she decided to call us to help Dexter.

Dexter is probably a Cross Weimaraner/Labrador. When we found him, he only weighed 14.9kg. A dog his size should weigh between 25 to 30kg.

Dexter is thin as a rail, literally skin-and-bones.

Seeing the condition that Dexter was in, we immediately brought Dexter to the vet for a health assessment.

Dexter at Mount Pleasant (Redhill), waiting for his turn to get his health check. Seeing how thin he was, Dr Teo offered him a bowl of dog food but Dexter was more interested in the dental treats at the vet clinic and chomped up every bit of it.

At the vet, tests were done on Dexter. He was having a slight temperature, his blood count was a tad lower than normal (which could be the result of malnourishment and starvation). His white blood count was elevated which indicated infection of some form. But we were relieved that test showed that he was free from tick fever and heartworm.

Dogs have given us their absolute all. We are the center of their universe. We are the focus of their love and faith and trust. They serve us in return for scraps. It is without a doubt the best deal man has ever made.

Dexter is the sweetest young man. Undemanding, easy-going, optimistic and warm. He is estimated to be about 1 to 2 years old. We are not sure how Dexter became so emaciated, whether he once had a family or was a breeding dog that has outlived his usefulness. We can only feel his emotions - but one thing for sure, Dexter is a fighter and he wants to live life to the fullest. He doesn’t give up on life. He feels no self pity and like a soldier, he trudges along bravely and optimistically.

Recently, while cleaning his teeth, Dexter’s fosterer found a bamboo stick of about 3 inches long, lodged in the upper soft palate of his mouth. No wonder, there was a foul smell in his mouth despite numerous brushes over the last few weeks. Because of how deep the stick was embedded, it wasn’t spotted during the last 2 vet visits. It must have been there for some time and the gums have eroded.

This is a testament to the great endurance that Dexter exhibits. He was a contented and happy boy that no one would have guessed that he had a painful wound on his mouth.

There is light at the end of the tunnel for Dexter. A kind family has decided to foster him and he has since gained 2.3kg with nutritious meals.

Despite the tender loving care that Dexter receives and sumptuous home cooked meals which he eats heartily every day, Dexter’s blood count dropped from 31 when we first found him to 26. The vet will be doing another blood test in a week’s time and we are keeping our fingers crossed that his blood count will improve. If the blood count continues to drop, further tests need to be performed.

We hope that one day the authorities will change the guidelines and allow our Singapore Sepcials to stay in our HDB apartments.

We are Responsible Pet Owners, we train our dogs to listen, to obey and to respect our community and neighbours.

If the authorities give Pet Owners a chance to let our Singapore Specials stay in HDB apartments, we promise that our dogs will not be a nuisance to our neighbours and our dogs will help us to guard and protect our home, family and neighbours.

When a street dog is given a chance to stay in an our HDB apartment - there will be less strays on the streets.

Starring our Vagabond Dogs who once lived on the streets, while some were abused and abandoned.

These are our very lucky dogs who have found their forever home with their Masters whom they adore, respect and are forever grateful towards.

This world would be a better place if their other furry friends could have the opportunity to find love and shelter like them.

Like humans, there is poverty in third world countries, where they struggle to make ends meet worry when will their next meal be. These dogs went through a similar plight – but they are lucky in a way because many people like you and me care for them and ensure that they don’t go hungry.

It is not easy running a shelter in Singapore, as the main cost is the rental of the boarding facility, medical fees and food. Funds are required to keep the shelter going every day and ensuring that the animals have their basic needs. Zeus Play House is now home to 40 dogs – the dogs that we have helped are mainly ex-breeding dogs, abandoned dogs, injured and or once abused by humans.

Every purchased calendar will help us greatly in giving them what is required for their daily needs.

Do Cats Know How to Ask for Help?

Well.... we think Scooter the Cat, actively sought help to get off the streets and to be in a safe home environment again. Read about Scooter’s cry for help below.

I was waiting for a fellow volunteer, Irene to pass me the medication for one of our rescue dog at the shelter when Scooter walked up to me.

What struck me most was how handsome he looked. He would be considered in my books a feline hunk.

Scooter came up to me, sat down right beneath my feet and peered into my eyes with his big expressive blue eyes, almost as if it was reaching out to me. I could imagine Scooter giving me his paw if I gave him a treat.

Intrigued by Scooter’s almost dog-like behaviour, I instinctively bent down to stroke him. That was when I caught a whiff of an unpleasant odour.

Note: Scooter looks like a mixed Burmese cat. After some research on the internet, I found out that Burmese cats are very affectionate and enjoy company, being a people oriented breed who form strong bonds with their owners. Wikipedia also describes Burmese as having dog-like characteristics, often learning to play fetch and tag.

I have always had a very keen sense of smell and upon investigation, I realised that Scooter had a very nasty ear infection and his chest looked wet and slimy. That was when Irene came along. She too was instantaneously attracted to Scooter, proving what a charmer he was. Scooter followed us around and did not want to leave our sight. We fed him some food and water.

Deep down inside, I had a feeling that Scooter was asking for help. However, neither of us had a pet carrier nor could we take Scooter immediately as I had to return to work. I told myself that I will look for Scooter again the next morning. Reluctantly we left Scooter.

Irene who left later than me reported that “a big tear drop” flowed down from Scooters left eye.

I immediately called Lynda to ask if we could let Scooter know that if he needs help, to go back to the same spot that I left him.

The next morning, armed with a pet carrier, we set off looking for Scooter. To our amazement, Scooter was waiting right at the same spot for us, hiding under the car for shade. As I have little experience in handling cats, I was still thinking to myself, how I should carry Scooter. That all proved to be a non-issue as Scooter walked into the pet carrier willing!

Scooter was brought to Mt Pleasant Bedok and attended to by Dr Teo who performed full blood tests for Scooter. He is estimated to be about 5 to 7 years of age. His ear and body were covered in fur mites, which explained his slimy chest as Scooter had scratched till there was open skin. Scooter is also found to be FIV positive. Scooter also has a very bad case of gingivitis and a few of his decayed teeth needs to be extracted. That perhaps explained the big tear drop. His infected ear cum decayed teeth must have caused him much discomfort.

In order to ensure Scooter’s safety during general anaesthesia, his dental surgery will only be done in one month’s time, after we have ensured that he does not have any illness lying dormant.

FIV stands for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. As FIV is mainly passed from cat to cat through fights, Scooter can only be adopted into a family where he is the sole cat in the household. FIV cannot be transmitted to a dog or a human, only from cat to cat. Many cats that are infected with FIV live a fairly normally functioning life. However, as the immunity is severely weakened, this makes an FIV cat susceptible to secondary infections. Hence, Scooter can no longer be a stray and needs a loving and secure home to live in. As part of the routine, we requested that the vet scan for microchip. Much to our surprise, Scooter does have a microchip implanted which is extremely rare in cats. Scooter must have once had an owner and perhaps even have been bought from a pet shop? He has also been sterilized. Could Scooter have been lost, or was he abandoned by his owner?

Lynda immediately contacted AVA and SPCA in the hope of tracing Scooter’s owner but unfortunately, the microchip was not registered.

After being boarded at an air conditioned cattery at Ericsson Pet Farm, Scooter is currently fostered by an extremely kind animal lover whose life’s passion is to bring comfort to disadvantaged cats and dogs. However, Scooter needs a forever home.

Just to share that when I was sending Scooter to his foster home, I heard a deep sound, like that of a soft snore. I initially thought Scooter was asleep and snoring but I felt a sort of a vibration when I stroked his head. Only when I did sound research on the internet, did I realise that Scooter was actually purring then. That goes to show my great ignorance about cats. But this also gave me an assurance that Scooter is happy to be taken off the streets and his life has a stray has ended. What a wonderful privilege it is for Scooter to have chosen me and Irene to help him.

Scooter has a very charming, calm and mellow personality A hunky sort of feline with a dog-like personality. His fur mites and ear infection has cleared up. Besides being FIV positive, Scooter’s blood test showed no signs of other ailments.

Happy Hito Girl Found Love

I'd heard of Hito (a.k.a Girl Girl) since the day she was found, presumably abandoned, in a bad state, and walking by the roadside with her companion (Boy Boy). On standby to foster the two dogs should the need be, this never came up due to a series of events (her being at the vet’s, my being out of the country then, etc, etc).

Fast forward to two months later – June this year, and her rescuer asked if I would like to see her (I had been contemplating a new, third dog for some months, but none had been found suitable).

On her first visit to ascertain if my current two dogs in the house would get along with her, I was still ambivalent and unsure as to whether she was the right one. She was bright, affectionate and playful, but I was unsure if her addition would make my shy, introverted dog (Chimmi) retreat even further into his shell (he was also an adopted dog, a dog mill rescue who had the forlorn and cold experience of dog mill kennel life etched into his face and psyche).

I realised that one evening visit would not reveal anything, so we tried an extended weekend stay at my home to watch the interactions and behaviours unravel between the three little ones. Thankfully, they all accepted one another’s presence rather quickly and were quite content to be together.

And that’s how a weekend stay turned into a week, and a week became … permanent. It’s easy to understand why her stay with us became permanent: she is one of the happiest, waggiest dogs I’ve ever met. She likes dogs, she likes people, she loves food, hearts play and is as content to lie down beside you and quietly fall asleep. The bigger question that emerged was: why did someone abandon her and her boy companion? She is such an easy dog, so affectionate and such a bundle of joy all by herself.

It’s been over two months since Hito came into our lives, and the irrepressible spirit in her is something that can make anyone smile whenever they look at her. She’s a pretty fast-learner too: we took her to Sentosa beach one day and this little power turbo paddler proved her aquatic prowess; she has also just started basic obedience training and has displayed the ability to do anything for a treat!

She’s still a tad weary of new environments and bigger dogs, but with constant socialisation and exposure – walks and weekends at dog parks (where she cheers her agility-training brother, Ellie), we’re hoping she’ll enjoy outdoor life as much as her indoor one soon.

Perhaps because she had always been such a positive little thing in her own mind, getting Hito used to being a loved member of the family was all-too-easy. This was unlike her brother, Chimmi, who, maybe because he had spent far longer years in the confines of a dog mill kennel, took us months and months to bring out of his shell. Like Hito, when he first came to us, Chimmi refused to walk outside, he was also scared: scared of new floor surfaces, scared of stairs, scared of people, scared of … just about everything. Seeing Chimmi in the dog park today, tail held high like he owns the place, is such an amazing learning journey for both human and dog. Looking at him though, I wondered how more confident a dog he could have been if only he had a family, rather than a puppy-breeding factory environment, early on in his life.

There are more than enough dogs still waiting for such a chance today. And to anyone who has a heart and a will to make your own happy story with a new four-legged friend, look to adopt. Make a dog happy today, so that there won’t be any more “Chimmis” waiting in the sad wings of dog mill life.

Crystal's Recovery

Hello… I’m Crystal the kitty cat.

Dr Ang says it’s almost time for me to be discharged. I’ve been staying at Mt Pleasant Redhill for the last 7 weeks. From the tone of her voice, I know she can’t bear to let me go. She keeps telling Aunty Jeannie to make sure that I go to a good home. They’ve looked after me day in and day out and I’m like family to them now. I will never forget them even if I find a home. Everyone here has been so sweet towards me. They’ve tenderly nursed my wound when I was injured and in great pain.

Oh I would also like to thank everyone who helped Zeus Comms. to sponsor for my hefty medical bill. You are my HEROES. Thank you for helping me when I’m in need, rooting for me when I was hurting. I’m ever so grateful to you.

That was my wound after my first surgery when Dr Ang skilfully cleaned up my wound
and performed a skin graft on me to hasten the recovery process.

Everyone at the vet clinic has been so sweet towards me. They’ve tenderly nursed my wound when I was injured and in great pain. My paws would automatically open and close as Carrey the vet tech cleaned my wounds daily; it was excruciating but I know it’s for my own good so I’ll endure it with all my might and would never retaliate.

Dr Ang specially ordered this little green shirt for me. It’s meant for my wound to heal faster and of course to prevent me from chewing on it when it gets too itchy. Coincidentally, it helped to accentuate my green eyes.

The clinic staff knows I am very manja and would cuddle me whenever they are not so busy. They’ll even take me out to sayang me and let me roam about the clinic for a cat stretch. They also fed me well… they say that I’m a glutton and eat like a pig! Hee hee… I do have a huge appetite. Can you see my bulging stomach? My little green shirt seems to be a little tight now.

I need a home now that I’m almost completely healed. Would you like to take me home please? I promise to be a very good girl.

I ADOPTED A DOG

I was reading Tia's blog and saw this photo of a Shih Tzu named "Russell" (by his rescuer), who had been abandoned sometime in March.

The previous owners had tied him to the void deck and left him there for a day with no food and water. God only knows what human beings are capable of.

For some reason I felt compelled to do something. I've always loved dogs and have always wanted to have a dog of my own but I never took the plunge because I knew having a dog is a huge responsibility and a serious commitment and back then I wasn't sure if I was ready.

I asked Tia to bring Russell over to my place because I live alone and I was more than happy to look after him.

Initially the plan was to foster Russell, while we search for a good home for him.

On the first day, I changed his name. Because he was not responding to the name "Russell" at all. I started to randomly call out different names and he seemed to respond to "Cookie" only. So on 13 April 2011, he became Cookie. Cookie Darling!

Within a week, I knew he was not going anywhere.

I fell in love with Cookie.

The first night he was here, he vomited 6 times.

Tia and I freaked out. We guessed maybe he was car sick, or perhaps he over-ate or maybe he was really sick. The next day we brought him to the vet and it seemed that the vomiting was due to stress/ anxiety and not because he was physically unwell. The poor baby had to endure painful injections, taking blood and paw scrapings. I will never forget the sounds he made crying out in pain while the vet scraped his paws to check for parasites.

When he first came to me he was underweight, according to the vet. Only 6.5kg.

I started feeding him dry dog food mixed with wet food (canned chicken dog food), and as an attempt to fatten him up, I mixed in one whole square can of chicken meat mixed with the dry kibbles for every meal.

The rest of the week was horrible.

He had severe separation anxiety and I could not leave his sight, not even for a few minutes. I could not even go and take a shower without him peeing all over my living room floor. I could not go downstairs for 5 minutes to buy food without him peeing all over.

I basically could not leave his sight AT ALL.

I did not have a cage or a pan to confine him so he would end up peeing all over my house. I was tearing my hair out in frustration and having OCD certainly did not help. I was mopping my floor so many times a day that my hands started peeling.

My friends brought me a cage with a pee tray at the bottom and it was GOD-SENT. Thereafter, I would put Cookie in his cage whenever I had to go out, even for 5 minutes. He would pee but the pee would end up on the newspapers in the pee tray, so I no longer had to clean my floor like crazy any longer and I only had to change the newspapers. My house no longer reeked of dog pee. as the smell and stickiness took some effort to get rid of!

The second week I brought him for grooming.

After the first few difficult weeks, things got much better.

We settled into a very comfortable routine. I would feed him in the day and I would walk him at night. He would get so happy and excited every time I asked him, "Cookie, wanna go gai gai?"

He understands "gai gai" = going out for a walk, and "mum mum" = food!

I really enjoy walking him too and he gets quite a lot of attention from strangers. Whenever some people stopped to pet him, he would bask in the attention and wag his tail enthusiastically.

One amazing thing about Cookie is that he NEVER barks.

He has only barked twice since the first day he arrived and neither does he chew on random stuff, except for his toys. He will only whine a little if he wants to go out or needs attention. I consider him to be an extremely well-behaved dog and I am very lucky, indeed.

I had no experience in caring for a dog. I was so afraid I'd do something wrong and hurt him, or worse end up killing him! The first time I bathed Cookie, I felt like a new mother! But I just had to do it.

And surprisingly, it was rather easy.

I bathe him every 3 to 4days, depending on how dirty he is. He gets dirty rather quickly, since I walk him every night. After every walk, I wipe his paws, boy parts and backside with a clean wet cloth.

We forged a very special bond within the first month.

He sleeps in my room every night and has his own bed under my bedside table. And I am always beyond amused to hear him snore and woof in his sleep in the middle of the night.

He is so sticky that he will follow me every time I leave my room, be it the bathroom or to grab a quick snack from the kitchen. If I went to the bathroom, he would wait outside for me and walk back to my room together. He is such a sweet boy.

Would a boyfriend do that? I dont think so.

Before I had Cookie, I was either home alone all the time, facing four walls and the TV. Or I would go out and come home to an empty house. Life was dull and monotonous.

I had gone through an unpleasant period in my life and had completely lost all faith in love and relationships. I became an empty shell, devoid of heart and soul. I forgot how to laugh and even stopped believing in love.

I was mostly angry - at myself and at others. I had no appetite and I couldn't sleep at night.

When Cookie came into my life, I felt my soul coming back to me. Slowly, but surely.

My friends noticed that I became a lot happier and more cheerful person.

I mean it when I say- I did not save Cookie. Cookie saved ME.

I think God sent Cookie to me for a very good reason. He was lost and heartbroken - so was I.

God probably wanted to let us know that there is still love and hope in this world.

I wrote this in my blog to Cookie:

When you first came to me, I promised you I would love you and look after you.

I looked into your eyes and talked to you.

I tell you I love you everyday so you won't ever doubt it or forget.

I have accepted you into my home and my life, and now into my heart.

You bring me so much happiness and joy I don't know how to describe.

I have a good reason now to wake up every morning- I need to feed you! I love watching you eat, I love watching you sleep.

And Cookie Darling, I look forward to the many more days I will spend with you.

And I promise you, no man will ever replace you in my heart because nobody can love me in such a simple and pure way like you do.

I love you Cookie Darling. I promise I will always look after you and you never ever have to be worried or frightened again.

Lost & Found: Male Maltese

A male Maltese was found on Sunday, 14 August '11 by Fangyi at Jalan Mastuli (Charlton Park Estate). Its a young dog between 2 to 5 yrs old, in good health and without a micro chip.

Its Time for Changes for Our Street Dogs

Dear Friends,

The following article was sent to the Straits Times, Forum.

We would like to share with you that a group of passionate people who are involved in animal welfare are voicing their views from their hearts on behalf of the dogs who have shared this universe with us.

We are hoping that the authorities will hear their views and it's time to make changes to our system.

We want more compassion for the animals; do not cull the dogs and cats that have been sterilised. Caregivers have spent thousands of dollars to have them sterilised, so why should our hard earned money go down the drain? Sterilisation is the only key to reduce unwanted dogs and cats on the streets. In no time - these sterilised animals will eventually pass away one day from old age and the number of dogs will eventually be reduced.

Abandonment is the reason we find strays living on the streets. Is this how we treat our animals who were once part of our family members? Just because their owners are sick of them and dispose them, we kind souls end up feeling sorry and bring them home? Abandoning their pets will only create bad karma for them and they will have to live with guilt for life!

That said, how many of these abandoned pets can we actually rescue? How many can be kept alive? A pet is a lifetime commitment and even though AVA keeps promoting Responsible Pet Ownership, there isn't much improvement. So what has gone wrong with our system? I have come to the conclusion that we need not educate and convert responsible pet owners, but instead it should be the non-pet owners who should be fully educated.

Every year, animal welfare groups have been appealing to AVA and HDB to let Mongrels be HDB approved. Years have passed and we still see no change in the system. If pet owners are responsible, why can't we keep Mongrels in our HDB apartments? I have seen some Mongrels staying in HDB flats and they are just as well behaved and obedient as purebreds. Fearing neighbours' complaints, these owners have to take their dogs out in the middle of the night just to play safe. The fear resembles sneaking a mistress into the house! Why should we live in fear? What we want is change - we want HDB to relook into the system and to allow responsible pet owners to keep a Mongrel in their apartment.

Many people do not mind adopting Mongrels, however they do have one concern and that is - "Mongrels are not allowed in HDB flats." Majority of us Singaporeans are HDB dwellers, so can you imagine how many of our special breeds would have a home today if they were finally HDB approved?

We hope that you will take time to read Anita's letter to the forum. And let's start referring to our Singapore Specials as "Cross Breeds" instead of "Mongrels", for they are special in their own ways and have their own inner beauty which we can appreciate.

Save Our Street Dogs (SOSD)

We are a small group of friends who have been actively feeding and rescuing stray dogs at different locations in Singapore for many years. I am writing in to highlight the plight of these dogs.

Due to the recent development of the Lorong Halus Wetland, many of these harmless dogs have been trapped and culled. Some of us have been working tirelessly to rescue as many dogs as we can. But to do so, requires a long period, effort and finances on our part. To date, we have managed to rescue more than 20 dogs in the last 4yrs, a very small number, as compared to the hundreds that have been trapped and culled indiscriminately by the authorities.

All those dogs that had been rescued, were treated by the vet, sterilised and vaccinated, some have been successfully adopted. For those that aren't so lucky, are housed in various boarding kennels or released back to where their original habitat were. These unfortunate dogs (due to no fault of theirs) have faced insurmountable odds to survive. Hundreds of these dogs have been culled through the years, to make way for the fast growing expansion and development in this nation. Most are trapped inhumanely, suffering horrific injuries before they are culled. We implore the MND to intervene. Stop the culling of these harmless dogs. AVA (the government agency ~ AGRICULTURE and VETERINARY Authority) charges a hefty sum of S$400 +, for each dog to be released to volunteers like us. VET and boarding are a astronimical cost to us. We would like to make a request to AVA to waive this fee. The waiver of this fee will be a reflection of AVA's true commitment towards animal welfare and humane practices.

Here are some of our thoughts on how the government can be more pro active in controlling the stray dogs population.

Finding homes for these dogs are mired by a huge obstacle, one being, that a large population of Singapore live in HDB flats. We implore the HDB to review it's current policy and allow these dogs to be adopted into HDB homes. Non-profit organisation like The Singapore Kennel Club can help. The SKC provides a wide range of courses, including obedience classes for dogs. These classes are essential tools to help rehabilitate and train these dogs to better intergrate and co-exist in our society.

A big contributing factor to the stray population is irresponsible pet ownership. The government should legislate compulsory micro chipping and licensing and advocate sterilisation of pets. Heavier penalties should be meted out to owners if they are proven to have abused or abandoned their pets.

If the above measures, are taken into consideration, we are convinced that there will be significant and visible results in the stray dogs (and cats) population. We strongly urge for the government to initiate change in our nation and strive towards a more compassionate and humane society. May I quote BG TAN, (Minister Of State for Ministry of National Developement) 6^th Aug from the online portal ~ "people must acknowledge that pets and strays are inevitably part of the living environment and should find ways to best live alongside them".

We would like to salute the founders of the various animal welfare groups, Ricky (ASD ~ Action For S'pore Dogs), Ms Cathy Strong (ALL ~ Animals Lovers League), Raymond Wee (Noah's Ark CARES), Lynda Goh ( Zeus Communications ). Many thanks to Mr Ong, Mr Han and Mohan for rescuing a stray dog (named Xiao Hei) that had lost mobility on his right leg, and giving him a chance to live instead of putting him down; to Alysha and Tara who donated all their birthday 'ang pow' collections to Zeus Communications (animal shelter); and to the many other volunteers island wide who have dedicated their whole lives to saving our street dogs.

Xiao Hei was rescued by Mr & Mrs Ong and Uncle Han who have been feeding strays for the last 5 years with the help from Mohan of Animal Lovers League . Xiao Hei disappeared for 2 days, the caregivers were so worried that they did not give up and kept looking for him.
Xiao Hei fell into the canal that was almost 5ft deep. Mrs Ong in her 60s used her heart to search for Xiao Hei by sliding into 5ft deep canal - she did not even think of her safety or danger by doing what she did. We are thankful that it did not rain when Xiao Hei was stuck in the canal. Stay tune for Xiao Hei's story...

Vicky The Shih Tzu

More often than not, we cross paths with irresponsible pet owners who claim to love their pets but neglect them. Or love them for a while then that love dies when they find new interests in life.

I recently found out about an 8 year old Shih Tzu, Vicky, through a friend. Vicky's owner has a full-time job and the poor dog was often caged up at home for long hours while she was at work, losing most of her paper-training concepts. The friend who contacted me knew about Vicky's situation of being locked up for long periods and tried persuading the owner to put the dog up for adoption. The owner could not bear to give Vicky up and promised to re-train her, love her and bring her for her due vaccinations, sterilization and necessary medical assessments.

One year later, still nothing was done. The owner was way too busy with work to care about poor little Vicky. During her frequent trips overseas, Vicky would be left alone at home, caged up with just a huge bowl of food and water. Did the owner expect a dog to know how to ration her food and water intake for a week??

Vicky's cleanliness, hygiene and health were neglected to a great extent. When my friend contacted me to help the owner, Vicky already had skin and ear infections. I talked to the owner and she decided that she couldn't handle the responsibilities of owning Vicky. The owner felt that Vicky was already 8 years old and an old dog could never be taught new tricks – and in this instance, could not re-learn her paper-training and basic commands. The owner also admitted that a dog that is caged and neglected is a "poor thing" and finally gave up ownership and thus, ending Vicky’s suffering.

Vicky was fostered by a kind family and has been through thorough health checks. Besides being on medication for her skin and ear infections, Vicky has been given an excellent bill of health.

We are pleased to let you know that Vicky has seen found her forever home and we are so happy for her new family has accepted her after what she has gone through.c.

Why keep a pet when you’re not going to care for it?

A Story of Terrible Feline Suffering & Incredible Feline Bravery

This is Crystal. She is a very petite and sweet natured cat of less than a year old. She is still very much a toddler and ought not suffer what she has been through. Read about her ordeal below.

Last Monday night, Zeus Communications received a call from a young lady, SY to request for help. SY remembered Lynda from one of our talks and googled Zeus Communications for our contact details.

SY asked us to help her with a cat that has a “wound” but we were not given details on how big or severe the wound is.

Apparently, SY’s father – Uncle Yap has been feeding Crystal on a regular basis but for 2 days, Crystal disappeared. When she finally reappeared, it was one of a plea for help. Crystal was seriously injured. A third of her body was covered in a deep open wound.

We could only imagine the tremendeous pain that Crystal has to endure and is continuing to endure.

As it was already very late at night, we advised Uncle Yap on what needs to be done and on our end we made all the necessary arrangements for Crystal to be attended to first thing in the morning at Mt Pleasant Redhill, which included arranging for pet transport for Crystal to be rushed down to the vet clinic quickly and safely.

In the meantime, Lynda communicated with Crystal to let her know that help is on the way and for her to hang in there.

Crystal was attended to by Dr Teo JW who performed all the necessary blood tests to ensure that Crystal was in good health before we proceeded with the general anaesthesia to clean up her wound.

While we do not know what exactly transpired, through animal communication, Crystal showed Lynda that someone had poured blistering hot liquid on her and she screamed in excruciating pain. We just cannot imagine who would ever do such a thing to a defenceless cat.

Crystal's horrific wound - still looking very raw and inflamed. We are glad that Crystal sought help from Uncle Yap who found us through his daugher SY. Without treatment, Crystal's wound would have been very badly infected and skin rot may set in, possibly putting Crystal's life in danger.

Crystal is currently hospitalized at Mt Pleasant Redhill. Although her wound is recovering under the care of Dr Teo JW, it is estimated that she is likely to have to be in the hospital for 1 to 2 more weeks as her wounds are still extremely raw and inflamed.

Antibiotics, anti-inflammation drugs and pain medication are being administered to Crystal and her wound has to be cleaned daily.

The vet technician has all but praises for Crystal. Although, the pain must be excruciating, Crystal is taking it like a brave little feline.

In spite of her horrendous pain and injury, Crystal exhibits tremendous fighting spirit and the will to live. She seems to know that the vets and technicians are helping her and would doggedly endure the pain, being very sweet and cooperative during her daily painful regimen of wound cleaning.

As Crystal is a very young cat, her chances of a full recovery is good. She is also FIV and FELV negative. Blood tests also shows her to be in good health.

Here’s three cheers and a round of meows for our brave little feline - Crystal.

Crystal would need to stay at the vet to be nursed until her wounds are healed. Her hospitalisation bill, including medication and medical procedures would cost est. $900. As of 31 July, the medical bill was $728.80.

FOUND AT EUNOS MARKET ON SUNDAY, 31 JULY '11

A male Shih Tzu was found this morning (Sunday, 31 July '11) by Daniel at Eunos Market. The dog is a senior dog between 5yrs and 7 yrs old, fully shaven, in good health and without a micro chip.

The Zeus Times - July 2011

Dear Friends,

The past 4 weeks have been extremely eventful and demanding. We had to attend to the puppies, help a lost dog and attend to some of our dogs at Zeus Playhouse who were afflicted by Kennel Cough. Thankfully, Dr Ang, who is our attending vet, visited the kennels last Saturday and the dogs were given their required medication and vaccinations.

Unfortunately, one of our puppies, Wang Wang, who was only 2.5 months old, caught pneumonia and passed away on 7 July after fighting a hard battle for 6 days. Tia and Steven held a cremation service to commemorate her and she will be missed dearly. But we are also glad that Wang Wang passed away peacefully and with dignity, knowing that we loved and supported her throughout the ordeal.

The Rescue of 5 Breeding Dogs

On 17 July, we rescued 5 dogs from a breeder. These 5 dogs consisted of 2 Schnauzers, 2 Norwich Terriers and 1 Maltese. They were rescued because we didn't want them to suffer again in the hands of other breeders, which might lead to abandonment once they’re deemed as ‘useless’ and can no longer breed for their benefit. Like every other dog, we believe that they too deserve a Second Chance to be loved and cared for by their owners.

After a full health medical examination for the dogs by Dr Ang, we discovered that most of them had ear infections, dry eyes and bad teeth. Sadly both the Schnauzers have heartworm and one of the Norwich Terriers has kidney failure.

JoJo, a female Maltese being examined by Dr Ang and she is in good health.

Mon Mon, a female Schnauzer was diagnosed with Heartworms.

Toffee, a 4 yr old male Norwich Terrier was diagnosed with Kidney Failure.

He is now receiving treatment and taken care off by his foster family.

Twinkle, a female Schnauzer was also diagnosed with Heartworms.

Adoption Drive

We would like to thank everyone who visited the Adoption Drive, which was organised by Hill’s Pet Nutrition and Science Diet on 25 and 26 June. 6 lucky dogs have being adopted by very loving families and we are very grateful to these families for giving them a well-deserved second chance.

Girl Girl, The Jack Russell Terrier

On a fateful Saturday morning, a female Jack Russell followed Mdm Phua home from the market. As Mdm Phua was unable to keep the dog, she called Zeus Communications for assistance. Hence we went to Telok Blangah to fetch the dog and boarded it at the kennel till we found her owner. It was extremely fortunate that the dog was micro chipped and that the owner had registered the details with AVA , so we managed to trace her owner with the assistance of AVA and they were happily reunited on 21 June.

Note to Pet Owners - The Importance of Micro Chipping

Should your dog ever go missing, the finder will be able to locate you with the assistance of AVA and Pet Call. So if your pet isn't micro chipped yet, please make it a priority to do so.

Friend, The Mongrel
On17 July afternoon, Friend had managed to escape from his adopter's house and although both foster and rescuer had combed the area for him for hours, they were still unable to find him. They were extremely worried because Friend isn't street smart, is wary of people and timid. With Friend missing, they felt like a part of their lives were empty and were constantly panicking over Friend’s safety.

Zeus then assisted in finding Friend by guiding the rescuer on what needed to be done. At 9 pm, we received a call from the rescuer that Friend had been found and everyone’s hearts were finally at ease.

Miss Fiona Foo has left us as a volunteer to embark on a new journey, hence Fiona will no longer be representing Zeus Communications and we would like to wish her well and all the best with her future endeavours.

Perhaps now it is the time for me to share with you the reason why Zeus Communications was started. 9 days before my dog, Zeus passed away, he had many wishes that I had to fulfill for him and it was amazing how intensely we communicated during those 9 days. Firstly, he did not like staying at the vet and wanted to go home in the evening after treatment. He also desired to see some human friends whom he had not seen for years because he missed them deeply and wanted to bid them farewell in his own way. Most importantly, he wanted to take a last look at the place that he grew up at and enjoy as many more car rides as possible. He then passed away peacefully on 7 April 2010 after I granted all his wishes. It is difficult to describe how I felt when he passed away, but to put it simply, yes, I was sad to lose my best friend, but also very happy that he had the best life during his 9 years with me and that I could grant his last wishes.

After his passing, I decided to set up a registered company to conduct Animal Communications Workshops, hence this is how Zeus Communications came about. These workshops are meant to teach students how to communicate with animals and to let them understand that animals have emotions and feelings just like us humans. Our main objective is to make sure that owners try to work things out with their pets instead of giving them up.

In addition, we do Reiki for Pets which is safe and complements both Western and Chinese medicine for pets. Not only does it promote healing and recovery when your pet is ill, it also reduces possible side effects from medication. Not to mention, Reiki can also help with emotional and behavourial problems in pets.

Despite the reason for setting up Zeus Communications, animal rescue just happened naturally as we moved on. Because I have been in the Animal Rescue circle for close to 20 years, it is hard to turn away when you see an injured animal asking for help, especially hit and run victims and abused animals. We do what we can with the resources that we have, and we are very thankful to all our supporters who have made our work possible. We also emphasize to our volunteers that safety is our priority and that we can’t get ourselves hurt or bitten by an animal. If the animal is too wild or ferocious, we will step back and get assistance from the experts.

Dear Friends

We would like to thank all our volunteers and friends who were at the recent adoption drive on 25 and 26 June ‘11 organized by KC Watson, distributor of Science Diet at U-Pegamart.

Getting treats from the visitors

It was a great pleasure to meet new friends who were willing to spend your weekend helping the dogs find homes. We are pleased to inform you that 5 dogs have already moved into their new homes since the Adoption Drive.

As we all know that life on the streets or in the boarding kennels is not a life for the dogs. They deserve to be unconditionally loved and cared for – to live in a home and to have people around them to call their name.

We would like to say a special thank you to Tia and Steven, our volunteers who have helped to co-ordinate with the new volunteers and the logistics for the adoption drive. We know that the dogs had a great time taking a nice ride from the shelter to U-Pegamart. At the same time, some of the dogs had a special treat – their favourite past time – swimming!!

Adoption Drive - Second Chance for Love

Science Diet has organized an adoption drive for some 18 puppies, 11 rabbits and 15 kittens! These lovely animals are looking for homes to go to, where they will be loved and cared for.
